Two changes to the bantam program announced for the 2017-2018 season:
At the September 13, 2017 meeting of the Hockey Edmonton Board of Directors a motion to align non-body checking categories with those of Hockey Calgary was approved for the 2017-2018 season. With this change, the first tier below the provincial eligible categories (now called Tier 3) will now include body checking. This third tier will now have more opportunity to find tournaments. In the 2016-2017 season non-body checking teams were not allowed to enter a body checking tournament. With Calgary and the majority of the province having body checking at that level, there were practically no tournaments available. This will increase the opportunity for players who want to play full contact. SEERA will continue to evaluate based on the ability of individuals and teams. Players capable of playing in the top three tiers will be asked if they would like to play body checking or not.
In an attempt to align Hockey Edmonton with teams throughout the province, Hockey Edmonton will be using a 6 tier categorization. This will make it easier to match other programs throughout the province for tournaments or exhibition games.
