U18 Directors Message - End of Evaluations (29-Sept-2023)

With Evaluations coming to an end on Friday, we are wrapping up the process and plan to have teams finalized this weekend, and you will receive an email from your coach by Sunday (October 1st), with the potential to start practices on Monday (October 2nd).

For those interested in Coaching, please reach out to me if you haven’t done so already, same for those willing to be Team Managers – we generally know who you are, but always helps if you raise your hand.

We continue to work through friend requests, so some of you have been receiving emails, and we do appreciate all the quick responses. We continue to do our best to make as many friend requests happen as possible, as we do want to make the year as exciting and as successful as possible. We do however only offer players the opportunity to move down tiers (not up), and for the most part will not consider friend requests where two or more tiers separates the players, as a player moving down multiple tiers from where they evaluate, will be out of place in the lower tier.

This year SEERA will have ten teams, with multiple teams in tiers 3BC, 2NBC and 3NBC (3 Teams). We are confident we should be competitive with all teams.
Evaluations are not perfect, we understand some players may be really excited about their team this year, and others will be disappointed. U18 has three years’ worth of players, including some players that will be 18 years old in only a few months. There is an adjustment for younger players moving up from U15, especially as the tiering is different from previous years. It can also be challenging for U18 players, who may play in a lower tier than last year, resulting from the talent coming up this year from U15.

All tiering and team decisions are made based on what we have seen on the ice these past few weeks.

Evaluations are also fair and transparent, with every player having had the opportunity to progress to the proper tier and team where they can be successful. Unfortunately, positions can have an impact on where players play. For example, we may have 28 forwards who play at a Tier 5 level, but only spots for 20 of them in Tier 5, so 8 of those players will play this year in Tier 6 – and there is often not much difference between the players. This does happen in most of the tiers. It also works the other way, where we may not have enough defensemen at the Tier 5 level, so defensemen who evaluate to Tier 6, may be pushed up into Tier 5. It is a balancing act for sure, it is challenging, and we are working in the best interest of all players.

Finally, and most importantly we would like to thank the dedicated Evaluators, the majority of them came to every single skate through all the Group skates – which was an incredible commitment and really does make for a high level of confidence in the evaluation results.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself (u18@seerahockey.ca) or Bill Beaton (asstu18@seerahockey.ca).

Have a great season!
